Im looking to find out about professional learning and CPD

what are the differences in the two ?

  • Nova

CPD stands for continuous   professional training

so I think the two are the same thing

    Hi Niall

I'm not sure that the two terms really are analogous, IMO.

A more formal definition might go like this:

"Professional training" confers (or is the precursor to an examination leading to) a "professional" qualification.

The precise level of the qualification is not defined by the term, but (especially in a coaching context) might include a general statement of competence, and may well comprise a "license" to work, independently or under appropriate supervision and (implicitly) for payment (the "professional" element).

Continuous (or, better, Continuing) Professional (or Personal) Development implies ongoing training or other developmental activities e.g. attending conferences, seminars and webinars) post achievement of a formal professional qualification.

Completion of CPD by itself might not confer additional professional competence, but can prepare the coach for higher professional qualification (or simply add more tools to the coaches' "toolkit").
